Course Content

Outline the main causes of work-related accidents and ill-health.

List the main costs of work-related accidents and ill health to employers, employees and society.

Outline the duties and responsibilities of employers, employees and others with respect to workplace health and safety.

Describe the provisions for risk assessment contained in key legislation.

Outline how workplace health and safety legislation is enforced and the penalties for non-compliance

Describe what is meant by the term ‘risk assessment’.

Describe the necessary competencies of a risk assessor.

State sources of advice and information for carrying out workplace risk assessments

Describe the stages involved in a typical risk assessment.

State the requirements for recording, monitoring, reviewing and revising workplace risk assessments

Describe how an accident and ill-health records can be used to target hazards and control the level of risk.

Describe how occupational, environmental and human factors affect the level of risk from hazards at work.

Identify a range of work-related health and safety hazards in various work environments

Outline who may be at risk from work-related hazards

Identify a range of control measures for different workplace hazards.

Determine if control measures currently in place are suitable and sufficient in terms of the risk control hierarchy.

Online Examination and Assessment

This qualification is obtained by taking a 1-day interactive online course via Zoom and is assessed through an online multiple-choice examination using Highfield's Qualify at Home service and a work-based assessment.

Part 1: Online multiple-choice examination

Candidates will be assessed by a multiple-choice examination where the candidates must answer at least 20 out of 30 questions correctly. The examination will take one hour to complete.

Part 2: Risk assessment project

Candidates are also required to complete a written assignment, which includes carrying out risk assessments in their workplace. This assignment should be completed during the course and then moderated by the Highfield.

This course is perfect for managers, supervisors, heads of department, quality controllers, technicians, engineers, health and safety specialists, and any personnel responsible for carrying out risk assessments, regardless of the industry or environment they work in.

It is also suitable for employees who contribute to the risk assessment process.

Requirements

Candidates attending this course must have previous training in general health and safety, ideally the Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the Workplace.

It is also recommended that they have a good standard of written and oral communication, the ability to analyse workplaces and work activities, the confidence and ability to seek advice and information and the capability to work as part of a team.
